4 Photography tips for taking a better photo

Jimmy, our photographer on tour, is our resident expert for how to take a great photo. We caught up with him to ask him for the best (easy) ways to take a great photo.

Who better to give expert photography tips than a pro! So we caught up with Jimmy, a photographer we sent on tour, to ask him for the best (and easiest) ways to get a great shot. Get his four tips and see how his pictures turned out below!

Observation

1. Observation

“You need to focus on what really catches your eye. Ask yourself, what do I want to shoot and what is interesting to me? Portrait? Landscape? Architecture? Take various shots, but make sure to capture what matters to you. Paying attention to simple details, people or settings will allow you to capture the best moments.”

Composition rule of thirds

2. Composition

“This is what will draw the attention to your shot. Make sure you respect the rule of thirds—divide your frame into thirds vertically and horizontally, then place your subject in one of the corners where the lines intersect. This will ensure you’re getting a dynamic photo. Figure out what you like most about the scene and focus on a detail that’s evocative of that feeling.”

Composition

3. Lighting

“Paying attention to the light will make for great photos. During a bright, sunny day, the intensity of contrasts is too strong, so choose one kind of light—take a photo of something mostly in the sun or mostly in shadow to avoid mixing those two contrasts. Try taking photos early in the morning or late in the day, when the intensity of light is lower.”

Experimentation

4. Experimentation

“Have fun! Something as simple as crouching down for a new perspective can add a lot to your photo. And take lots of photos—the more you take, the more chances you have to find that perfect one.”
