One of the best parts of train travel is getting up close to the scenery—and on our new tour Switzerland by Train: Lucerne to Zurich, that scenery is the Alps, which makes for one incredible ride. Throughout the trip, you’ll hop aboard three different scenic railways for some of the most memorable views in Europe (we aren’t kidding, they’re amazing). Here’s a sneak peek at what’s waiting for you.
GoldenPass Railway
On this initial train ride, you’ll get your first taste of what the rest of the trip has in store. Travel from Lucerne to Interlaken on coaches complete with panoramic windows so you won’t miss out on a single photo op—and there are many. Make sure to keep your camera at the ready on this leg of the journey. You’ll chug past Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus, and the Bernese Oberland region of the Alps en route.
Glacier Express
From Zermatt, the mountain town in the shadow of the Matterhorn, you’ll hop aboard the Glacier Express and take off across southern Switzerland to St. Moritz. Over the years since its first service in 1930, the Glacier Express has earned a reputation for being the slowest express train in the world. Good thing too, because that means you won’t only be treated to views of the Rhine Gorge and Oberalp Pass, but you’ll have plenty of time to really take it all in.
Bernina Express
If you’re looking to cross off a World Heritage Site from your list, then you’re in for a treat! The Bernina line (which you’ll be traveling on as part of this ride) was recognized by UNESCO in 2008 for its feats in architecture and civil engineering and for how well it fits in with the surrounding landscape. The route promises equally impressive views, too as it climbs up to the Bernina Pass, passing over bridges and through tunnels along the way.
