Photography tips: How to get the perfect iPhone shot

Want to take frame-worthy photos on tour? You can—it doesn’t require any professional photography equipment! Here are traveler and creative professional Michael’s top three tips for taking stunning travel photos on your iPhone.

Want to take frame-worthy photos on tour? You can—and it doesn’t require any professional photography equipment! Just ask traveler and creative professional Michael, who set out on tours in Scandinavia and Portugal, Spain & Morocco with just an iPhone in hand. Read on for his top three “iPhoneography” tips.

I’m probably one of the more unconventional photographers. On my past two tours, I shot almost all my photos on my iPhone. When I’m on vacation, I don’t like to lug around my heavy cameras and equipment. And sometimes, not drawing too much attention with your big cameras in strange places is a good thing! It is less invasive and the locals tend to be friendlier. So here are a few helpful iPhoneography tips:

1

Do your research Before your trip, search for specific geotags on Instagram to find good spots for pictures, and to see how others shoot their own photos in those locations. Then, emulate the ones you like!

2

Shoot a lot of pictures Don’t just point and click once and walk away. The chances of getting a good photo are higher if you capture three, or five, or twelve! Of course, don’t share everything you captured. Be critical of your own work and pick only the best ones to post on social media.

3

Edit your images There are many apps out there that will enhance your images; my personal favorite is Snapseed. However, Instagram has certainly caught up with other, more robust photo editing apps, and oftentimes, I just edit my photos using the tools of Instagram. Lightroom, VSCO, and SKWRT are all really awesome and user-friendly.

Head to Michael’s Instagram or personal website to check out more of his work!
