5 ways to spend free time in Santorini

Dreaming of a trip to the Greek Islands? Us, too. These five ways to spend free time in Santorini are all the things we can’t wait to do again.

Hike to Oia

One of the best things to do in Santorini? Hike from Fira to Oia. It’s a little more strenuous than your average walk in the park but it’s worth it, according to our staffer Brittany. “It’s absolutely breathtaking,” she said. Andres, who traveled to Athens and the Greek Islands, agreed. “Sometimes it can get tricky making your way, but once you get there it’s incredible.”

Eat a gyro and a Greek salad (and all the feta)

Everyone who visits Greece raves about the fresh food. Whether you’re grabbing a gyro-to-go from one of the street vendors in Santorini or sitting down to some fried feta with honey (we seriously can’t stop thinking of it), you can’t go wrong with Greek eats.

Head to the beach in Kamari

Our staffer Matt, who talked about his time in the Greek Islands on tour, recommends hopping on the bus in Santorini and heading to nearby Kamari, which is famous for its volcanic landscape and black-sand beaches. Plus, if you ask staffer Brittany, the village is “a low-key and beachy town with great restaurants and shops!”

Try a wine-tasting

Santorini’s volcanic soil and sunny climate make it a great place for grape-growing—and winemaking. All that makes tasting wine one of the best things to do in Santorini! The island is most famous for Vin Santo, a sweet wine made from sun-dried grapes, which is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Vassaltis is one of our favorite vineyards and one you’ll visit on tour. Once you’ve learned how to taste wine from an expert, you’ll be ready to try it on your own! Santorini is dotted with lots of wineries, many of which you can visit for just a few euros.

Visit a museum

Greece is of course known for its amazing archeological sites, and Santorini is no exception. On tour, you’ll visit the famous Akrotiri excavations, where you can view the remnants of an ancient Minoan civilization. If you’re still itching for more world history, pop in to the Archaeological Museum of Fira to see more artifacts from Akrotiri and Thera, another nearby Bronze Age civilization.
