11 travel movies and shows to stream at home
We created Tiny Escapes to help bring you a little joy to your day in these unprecedented times. Here, find 11 travel movies and shows you can stream at home.
Right now, we’re all doing a lot more dreaming about travel than actually traveling. But just because you’re staying home doesn’t mean you can’t still get in the spirit. Here are 11 things you can stream right now to travel the world—all without leaving your couch.
Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (Netflix)
As Chef Samin Nosrat travels across the world, she discovers how different countries use the four essential elements of cooking—salt, fat, acid, and heat—in their cuisine. If the incredible food and stories don't bring a smile to your face, Samin Nosrat's infectious laugh absolutely will.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (Netflix)
85-year-old Jiro is one of the world’s greatest sushi chefs, and this documentary demonstrates how dedicated he is to his craft. It's very poignant, and the food looks incredible. It definitely had me dreaming of sushi, too.
The Kindness Diaries (Netflix)
In this inspirational travel series, Leon Logothetis (who abandoned his life as a London broker to see the world) makes his way from Alaska to Argentina with the help of his rickety motorbike—and the generosity of the locals he meets along the way.
Ugly Delicious (Netflix)
Another chef-led series (what can I say, food and travel just go together so well). David Chang visits everywhere from Japan and Lebanon to Australia and New Orleans in search of the world’s most delicious foods. Along the way, he explores how these dishes have such strong ties to the local culture.
Travel Man: 48 Hours In… (Hulu)
I love Richard Ayoade (of another favorite, The IT Crowd) who brings his offbeat sense of humor to this travel series, where he sees the world alongside some other famous—often British—faces.
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (Hulu)
There are only a couple of seasons of this travel classic on Hulu right now, but it's worth a revisit if you haven't watched in a while (or are new, too!). Watching Anthony Bourdain made me want to become a traveler.
Under the Tuscan Sun (Amazon Prime)
This feel-good favorite has everything—including lots of gelato. Following her recent divorce, Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) sets off on a tour of Italy and finds more than delicious food. She decides to buy a Tuscan villa and give herself a fresh start and a chance to live la dolce vita.
Eat, Pray, Love (Amazon Prime)
Not done with journeys of self-discovery? Join Julia Roberts as she travels from Italy to India and over to Bali in the big-screen adaptation of Elizabeth’s Gilbert widely loved book.
The Amazing Race (Amazon Prime)
Settle in to your couch and catch up on 29 seasons of this classic reality television series, where teams of people compete in challenges that take them all across the globe.
Paris, Je T’aime (Amazon Prime)
18 different stories set across Paris' arrondissements all add up to one lovely film, where the City of Love is always the main character. My favorite is Carol, who tells her French class about her trip. It's such a lovely portrait of what it's like to be a traveler.
