Animals of all spots and stripes stalk the iconic landscapes of Kenya, from herds of majestic elephants to the fierce lions and leopards of the grasslands of Amboseli National Park. Follow along with Jimmy as he looks for the Big Five on safari game drives, engages with local culture in the Masai Mara and soaks in the awe-inspiring scenery of this once-in-a-lifetime safari in Kenya.

Jimmy’s favorite day on tour

“That’s an easy choice for me! On the way out of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and into the Serengeti National Park, something amazingly cool happened. In a matter of about 30 minutes, we saw a cheetah, a leopard and a pride of lions laying in a tree!”

“We saw the cheetah first. He was laying on a mount by the road staring out at the horizon to spot possible pray. We were able to get a close look at the cat during the ten minutes before he decided to lay down on the other side of the mount to get some rest. We drove a little further down the track and saw a leopard in the distance lazily laying on a branch, resting before his night hunt. We then drove into an area with acacia trees and dense vegetation. Suddenly, we saw in the distance what appeared to be an animal in a tree. It turned out to be four or five lions resting in the tree’s branches. We got so close to them, it was unreal!”

Biggest surprise on tour

“One of the things that struck me during my time in Kenya is how the Masai culture mixes with the more modern way of life. As we drove through towns and villages from one park to the next, we would pass someone with modern clothing using a cell phone and then the person right next to him would be dressed in traditional Masai cloth, wearing intricate jewelry and holding a wooden stick in his hand. The contrast was both striking and interesting.”

Insider Tip: Best spot to catch a sunset

Sunrises and sunsets are truly majestic in the pristine landscapes of the safari parks, so we asked Jimmy what his favorite spot was. “The best place to watch a sunset and sunrise was from the viewing platform of the Lodge in Amboseli,” he told us. “You have a straight view looking down at Mount Kilimanjaro and there is a waterhole nearby. You get the chance to see the wildlife while looking at one of the most iconic mountains on earth—pretty cool!”
